The content
What you learn
The qualification is the YMCA Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Exercise and Fitness: Personal Trainer (Diploma), qualification number 610/3995/0. Level 3 goes deeper than Level 2: consulting and assessing your own clients, tailored programme design, nutrition, and training sessions outdoors as well as in the gym.
- Anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness professionals
- Nutrition for physical activity and exercise
- Consultation and assessment for personal training
- Plan, deliver and evaluate personal training
- Plan, deliver and evaluate outdoor training
- Business acumen for health and fitness professionals
The assessment
How you are assessed
There is no written exam. As at Level 2, the main assessment is a series of professional discussions: recorded sessions where an assessor asks you questions and you talk through your answers.
You also carry out a client consultation and assessment, design a progressive exercise programme, keep a training log, deliver one-to-one and small group training sessions, and give a final presentation.
Consistent attendance matters more here than at Level 2: the material is more complex and each session builds on the last, so plan to attend every session.
Where it takes you
A Level 3 qualification lets you train clients one-to-one, in gyms, outdoors or independently. The course includes a unit on the business side of personal training, and we bring gym representatives in to talk about the industry before you finish.
Can you get a free place?
A funded place costs you nothing if all four of these are true:
- You are aged 19 or over
- You are currently receiving benefits
- You are not enrolled on any other funded course
- You are not employed for more than 16 hours per week
Not sure, or not eligible? Apply anyway. We will talk your options through, including our new self-funded places. More on the funding page.
